About the Book
My daughter, Emilia, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was only 1-year-old. As she got older, I noticed she struggled with realizing she was different, and it was sometimes hard explaining it to friends in a way that was easy for them to understand. I had bought countless Diabetes books marketed to kids, but I found most of them to be too technical or overwhelming for young readers. That's when I decided to write my own story for her. I wanted to create a way to help her friends and classmates understand what she goes through every single day. I wanted something that would not only explain Diabetes in simple terms, but also celebrate her bravery and show her classmates how to be kind, supportive friends. In Emilia and Her Sugar Dragon, the Dragon represents her Diabetes: sometimes calm, sometimes cranky, sometimes needing extra care. Through playful rhymes and colorful illustrations, the book helps children understand what highs and lows feel like, how tools like insulin pumps and glucose monitors help, and why empathy matters. I wrote this book for Emilia, but also for every child who lives with Type 1 Diabetes. My hope is that it encourages understanding, inclusion, and compassion.
